The Umbwe Route is renowned as the steepest and most direct path to Kilimanjaro’s summit, offering a challenging and rewarding experience for fit, experienced climbers. This 6-day itinerary approaches from the south through dense rainforest before emerging onto exposed ridges with dramatic views. It later joins the Machame Route for the final ascent, providing solid acclimatization in the upper sections.

Day 1: Umbwe Gate (1,600m) to Umbwe Camp (2,940m)

Transfer to Umbwe Gate and begin steep ascent through lush montane rainforest.

  • Elevation gain: 1,340 m
  • Habitat: Rainforest

Day 2: Umbwe Camp (2,940m) to Barranco Camp (3,960m)

Very steep climb along ridges emerging from the forest into giant heather zone, ending at the dramatic Barranco Valley.

  • Distance: 6 km
  • Elevation gain: 1,020 m
  • Habitat: Moorland

Day 3: Barranco Camp (3,960m) to Karanga Camp (4,035m)

Scramble up the Great Barranco Wall, then traverse valleys with superb views of the Southern Icefields.

  • Elevation gain: 75 m (net)
  • Habitat: Alpine desert

Day 4: Karanga Camp (4,035m) to Barafu Camp (4,640m)

Steady ascent across alpine desert to high camp, with final preparations for summit night.

Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Midnight start for summit push to Stella Point and Uhuru Peak at sunrise, followed by descent to Mweka.

  • Hiking time: 7–8 hours ascent, 5–7 hours descent
  • Distance: 5 km ascent, 12 km descent
  • Elevation gain/loss: 1,255 m up, 2,795 m down

Day 6: Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m)

Final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate. Receive summit certificates and transfer back to Moshi.

  • Distance: 10 km
