The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as the most beautiful and scenic path on Kilimanjaro, approaching from the west across the remote Shira Plateau. This 7-day itinerary offers excellent acclimatization with the “climb high, sleep low” profile, resulting in one of the highest summit success rates while showcasing stunning, varied landscapes.

Starting in lush rainforest, the route crosses the vast Shira Plateau, traverses dramatic glacial valleys, and joins the southern circuit for the final ascent, providing panoramic views of the Breach Wall, Western Breach, and Southern Icefields.

Day 1: Londorossi Gate (2,100m) to Big Tree Camp (2,780m)

Drive to Londorossi Gate for registration, then continue to Lemosho trailhead. Trek through undisturbed rainforest.

Day 2: Big Tree Camp (2,780m) to Shira Camp 1 (3,500m)

Steep ascent out of the forest onto the Shira Plateau with sweeping views of the moorland.

  • Habitat: Moorland

Day 3: Shira Camp 1 (3,500m) to Shira Camp 2 (3,840m)

Easy day across the Shira Plateau with panoramic views of Kibo and the western glaciers.

  • Distance: 7 km
  • Elevation gain: 340 m
  • Habitat: Moorland

Day 4: Shira Camp 2 (3,840m) to Lava Tower (4,630m) to Barranco Camp (3,960m)

Climb to Lava Tower for acclimatization, then descend into the Great Barranco Valley.

  • Elevation gain/loss: 790 m up, 670 m down

Day 5: Barranco Camp (3,960m) to Karanga Camp (4,035m)

Scramble up the Barranco Wall, then short traverse to Karanga Valley.

Day 6: Karanga Camp (4,035m) to Barafu Camp (4,640m)

Final ascent to high camp with views of the summit ahead.

Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Midnight summit push to Uhuru Peak for sunrise, then descend to Mweka Camp.

  • Hiking time: 7–8 hours ascent, 5–7 hours descent to Mweka
  • Distance: 5 km ascent, 12 km descent
  • Elevation gain/loss: 1,255 m up, 2,795 m down

Day 8: Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m)

Final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate. Receive certificates and transfer to Moshi.
